58: How to get unstuck

Feeling stuck? Get unstuck with this episode of the Live Free Podcast

EPISODE 58: SHOW NOTES

Can you believe we’re halfway through 2019? If you are anything like me, a lot has happened since January. I set some big goals, accomplished almost all of them, and worked through feeling stuck a few times. Because we’re halfway through the year, it’s a good time to take a deep breath and evaluate where you are at and where you want to go.

For those of you feeling stuck

My goal is to walk you through how you can get unstuck. First off, if you are feeling stuck, no worries, it seriously happens to everyone! Maybe you are just getting started and things aren’t moving as fast as you like or maybe you reached a goal and instead of celebrating or feeling accomplished, you’re looking at what’s next.

No matter where you’re at, launching your business is a roller coaster and if you are not reaching a goal or you feel stagnant, you might be thinking,

Maybe it’s me…

I should give up

Or I need something. What can I buy? I need a coach or a course.

Or it’s everyone else. They suck. It couldn’t possibly be me, right?

When something’s not going the way we want, we want to find something to blame it on. Sometimes it’s ourselves, sometimes it’s other people and sometimes we look to fill that stuck-ness with a shiny object. So no matter what part of feeling stuck you are experiencing, I want to help you move through that sticky spot.

You aren’t alone

Multiple times this year I’ve experienced feeling stuck. I went through the emotions of maybe it’s me, maybe I should give up, oh actually I should buy something! I’ve spent hundreds of dollars just this month on courses I won’t ever implement. Each time I found myself chasing a shiny object that I thought would solve all my problems. I’ve also experienced a little bit of the, oh my gosh, it’s everyone else’s fault. Like it couldn’t possibly be me. I share this because I know I’m not alone. I see it online and I hear it from talking one on one with women about their businesses. Have you felt this way?

I set a goal and then did nothing

In January, I set a goal to get more visibility in 2019 and specifically, to get on TV. I set that goal and then did nothing. Doing nothing got me no where. I eventually signed up for a program to help me pitch myself to the local news and I went through the content, learned a lot but I didn’t do anything with what I learned. What I did do was got preoccupied with other things and just kind of sat on it. Then I found myself wondering, why didn’t this program work? Why didn’t I get on the news? Why haven’t I reached my goal? When I sat down to evaluate what I was doing and what wasn’t working, I realized that I wasn’t reaching my goal because I wasn’t doing anything. I was stuck!

I thought that it was going to be some magic pill that all of a sudden I would buy this course and then I would reach my goals. While the course gave me the information, it didn’t do the work for me. I had to implement it and put it into action and once I started implementing it and putting it into action, I was able to reach my goal. I think it was less than three weeks of implementing that I got on the local news!

Get unstuck

So I want to walk you through the process that I use when I’m at that point of feeling stuck. I learned this evaluation technique from Jaclyn Mellone. Jaclyn runs the Go-to Gal and the Go-to Gal Podcast and she is just fabulous.

First, sit down and evaluate where you’re at. Where are you right now in feeling stuck? Write out down or think through it out loud.

Second, where do you want to be? What are you trying to accomplish?

Third, evaluate what is preventing you from getting to where you want to go? Try to be as objective as possible. What is standing in your way? For most of you, the gap is probably one of three things.

One, you may have no idea what to do. Maybe you feel lost or stuck, but you feel stuck because you are lacking the knowledge or you are lacking the plan of what to do.

Two, the gap could be that you are too chicken to do what you know you should be doing.

Or three, you feel overwhelmed at all of the things that you should be doing.

Moving forward

So which one is it and how can we move forward with this information? If your gap is number one and you feel lost on how to launch your business or reach a consistent income, you should check out my program, Overwhelmed to Overbooked. You may already be in the program and you’ve accomplished your initial goals but you feel stuck as to how you are going to scale beyond 5k, maybe you should look at investing in your next mentor!

If your gap is number two and you are too chicken to do what you know you should be doing, then I get you! This was me when I wasn’t pitching myself. I knew what to do but I wasn’t doing it because I was scared. I was scared of getting a no, of not hearing back, and of getting laughed at. All of these what if’s were preventing me from doing what I know I should be doing. My advice? Just do it. Take imperfect action, adopt my “done, not perfect” mindset and put yourself out there and do the thing that you know you need to be doing but you are too scared to do.

It doesn’t have to be perfect

The first time you do what it is that you are scared to do, it’s probably going to be a little wonky. Plan for it! Plan for your first pitch to be a little bit eh or your first discovery call to not go perfectly. Maybe your first discovery call doesn’t result in a client, but you know what? If you never take that first call or that first pitch or that first whatever, you’re never going to get better. And if I wouldn’t have taken the chance to send that first pitch and that next pitch and the next pitch and gotten better and asked for feedback, I never would have made it on the news.

If it’s the third option, if you’re feeling overwhelmed by all of the things that you should be doing, you need to set performance goals. If you are not familiar with my goal setting process, check out Episode 31! The key to my process of setting goals and accomplishing them is setting performance goals. If you feel overwhelmed by all of the things that you need to be doing, you need to take a step back and look at your goals and to think about what tasks will actually lead to you accomplishing your goals. These tasks aren’t busy work, they are the actions that will lead up to your outcome goal which may be landing a certain number of clients or hitting a certain income goal.

Focus on what you can control

You can’t can’t control if you land five clients or if you make $3,000. You can control what you do each day. If you are wanting to crush your goals, you’ve got to be clear on your performance goals and you’ve got to stick to them each and every day.

Let’s say your outcome goal is to land your first client. What are the things that you can do each day to increase the chances of that goal coming to fruition? Tweaking your portfolio is not the answer. Focusing on learning more skills is not the answer. If you focus on these things, you most likely won’t reach your goal! Once you shift your mindset and start focusing on what will get you closer, like networking for a certain amount of time each day, you are that much closer to actually landing a client!

Once you’ve figured out what your performance goal needs to be, spend 75% of your time focusing on that and spend the other 25% on client work or on the tasks to build your business.

Ok, now what?

I want you to steal a few minutes with a hot cup of coffee and evaluate why you’re stuck. Where are you now, where do you want to be, and what is the gap? What is holding you back? I want you to then set at least two performance goals, decide on two tasks that you can do each day that will lead you one step closer to accomplishing your outcome goal. Then come share those tasks with the Live Free Community on Facebook! Or share it with me on Instagram by tagging me in your stories. Sharing publicly is awesome because it makes us feel more accountable. In the Facebook group I’ll be sharing a goal that I have not yet accomplished and what my performance tasks are so you guys can hold me accountable too!
