EPISODE 242 SHOW NOTES
On today’s episode, I am breaking down the strategy for going the “Cold Pitch” (direct outreach) route. I am sharing with you more about how to do this effectively so that you can actually land clients using this technique.
So, how a direct outreach, or “cold pitch” is usually done is that people will take a template, send to as many people as possible, just changing the name and send it out. People can tel that you’re sending the same message to everyone! This is a waste of time and energy!
The direct outreach route is quality over quantity. It takes a little more upfront work but that makes for better results.
Steps to going the “cold pitch” route:
1. Make a list of people that you’d like to potentially work with.
You can make this list by searching Instagram — take businesses that you are already following or that you already know or you can pull out a phone book and start searching but make that list.
A tip for this is to find someone with a need that you see you can fill.
Get a list of about 50 people you’d love to potentially work with.
2. Pick your top 5-10 and research!
Check out their Instagram, podcast, website, Youtube channel. Join their email list. Spend about a week doing your research.
3. Draft a strong templated email.
A lot of the emails that you send will have parts that are the same parts and some parts will be customized to your potential client.
4. Customize this template for each person.
Pull up your notes and customize that template for each person. If you could send that same email to everyone on your email list, it isn’t customized enough.
You’re probably not going to hear back from the very first email that you send to someone and that’s okay! I would follow-up at least 3 times.
My freelance template shop will launch Wednesday March 1 AND it’s going to launch at 40% off! It will be a place where you can purchase templates for those of you who are going the DIY route to building your business.

More about the Live Free Podcast with Micala Quinn:
How do I get started? What if I fail? Who will hire me? Is it really possible to create a consistent, full-time income from home?
Welcome to the Live Free Podcast with Micala Quinn where we will be answering these questions PLUS many more! Whether you’re just starting your freelance business (heck even if you don’t know what freelancing is yet) or you’re looking to scale, this podcast will give you tangible business advice along with inspiring interviews to help you create a life and career that works for YOU and YOUR family.
Your host, Micala Quinn, started out teaching high-school English, but when her first child was born, she immediately began searching for something more. She wanted a way to stay-at-home with her daughter (and future babies), but still needed to bring in a full-time income to help support her family. Micala started freelancing, quickly replaced her full-time income, and now helps other moms (like you) get started and grow their freelance business from scratch to 5K and beyond! She believes that being a working mom or a stay-at-home mom no longer needs to be a black and white decision. You CAN have both. On your terms!
Our motto is Mom Strong, Work Smart, and Live Free. Are you in? We’d love for you to join us each Monday, as well as in our Live Free Podcast Facebook community!
