219. 5 things I have learned about success over the last 5 years

Episode 219: 5 things I have learned about success over the last 5 years

EPISODE 219 SHOW NOTES

Happy Labor Day! Happy September! This month is a special one because we are celebrating 5 years of the Live Free Academy and 4 years of the Live Free Podcast! For today’s episode, I wanted to share with you the 5 things I have learned about success over the last 5 years. These are things I have learned in my own business and through helping over 2,000 women with their freelancing businesses as well.

1. Success comes in all shapes and sizes and no one’s definition is the same.

When we start building our business, it’s natural to start comparing. You may see others landing clients before you or their business grows faster than yours but don’t compare. The people that I see that have great success are the ones who have clarity of what success looks like for them. They know what their goals are and what they’re trying to achieve. Defining that for yourself is going to help so much when you feel like comparing yourself to others or when you feel like you need to do more and more and more.

Remember, if someone has landed clients before you or makes more money than you, they might have different tools in their tool bucket than you. They may have different experiences. They might know different people. You can’t always see the whole picture. When we start to compare, we don’t know what the other person is doing at all. Instead of comparing, ask that person “What have you done? What are you doing that has allowed you to be successful?” Then learn from that. It is important that as your business grows and you start reaching milestones that you always come back to your definition of success and not let others tell you what you need to be doing. Make sure it’s what you want.

2. Success is not made up of one major pivotable moment but of tiny moments that add up over time.

I remember in my early days, I would book a discovery call and put so much pressure on myself to make sure I landed it. If it didn’t work out, I would be devastated. Even as I pivoted to online course creation, there were moments that I thought my success depended upon a certain interview or appearance and that’s just not true. There are a lot of things that you can do for your business and a lot of milestones that you can hit, but one is not necessarily better than the other. What matters is all of those tiny moments added up together. It’s not one specific moment. It’s everything that you did before that moment and all of the lessons that you have learned, all of the mistakes, all of the nos, all of those have come together to create your success.

3. What you currently know does not determine your future success.

What you know now or what your current experience is does not determine your future success or what you can do in the future. Remember, everything can be learned. Whether you are in education or nursing or a stay at home mama, don’t keep focusing only on what you know or what you went to school for. You have to let go of that in order to get started and reach those goals. It’s not what you know or even what you learn that drives your success, it has to be paired with persistent and consistent action. That’s where success comes from.

4. Mistakes and challenges do not define you or erase previous success.

Mistakes and challenges are going to come along. They aren’t proof that you should quit. You are going to make mistakes. Some days you may want to quit but go back to your why. It’s ok to be upset or throw a pity party but once you are done come back and evaluate, make a plan, and move forward.

5. Success is inevitable when you start and don’t give up.

It helps to have a plan, to follow it, to evaluate it, to tweak it, to refine it and keep going. When you start, you’re going to face challenges and you’re going to have to learn new things. There’s going to be a lot of tiny moments that add up over time that will lead to your success. It’s not going to be one moment. Just like one moment doesn’t define your success, one moment can’t take it all away either.

I hope these were helpful!

More about the Live Free Podcast with Micala Quinn:

How do I get started? What if I fail? Who will hire me? Is it really possible to create a consistent, full-time income from home?

Welcome to the Live Free Podcast with Micala Quinn where we will be answering these questions PLUS many more! Whether you’re just starting your freelance business (heck even if you don’t know what freelancing is yet) or you’re looking to scale, this podcast will give you tangible business advice along with inspiring interviews to help you create a life and career that works for YOU and YOUR family.

Your host, Micala Quinn, started out teaching high-school English, but when her first child was born, she immediately began searching for something more. She wanted a way to stay-at-home with her daughter (and future babies), but still needed to bring in a full-time income to help support her family. Micala started freelancing, quickly replaced her full-time income, and now helps other moms (like you) get started and grow their freelance business from scratch to 5K and beyond! She believes that being a working mom or a stay-at-home mom no longer needs to be a black and white decision. You CAN have both. On your terms!

Our motto is Mom Strong, Work Smart, and Live Free. Are you in? We’d love for you to join us each Monday, as well as in our Live Free Podcast Facebook community!
