300: How Amanda Hiler Surpassed Her Teaching Income By Freelancing Part-Time

Happy Monday! Today, we’re chatting with Amanda Hiler, a former high school English teacher and mother of two who transitioned to freelancing and surpassed her teaching income while working only 25 hours a week. You do not want to miss this one!

Amanda loved teaching! And, with summers and holidays off with your kids, and your workday wrapping up by 3 or 4 pm, it seems like the best job for a mom. Unfortunately, Amanda constantly found herself working 55 hours a week, and she was struggling to balance her responsibilities as a wife, mom, and teacher.

Now, as a freelancer, Amanda works part-time and makes 33% more than she did as a full-time teacher! Amazing!

From Teacher to Freelancer

Amanda began freelancing while still working full-time as a teacher. She landed one retainer client and set aside all of that money in a little nest egg. When summer came, that financial cushion alleviated the pressure of transitioning out of teaching and gave her the time she needed to focus on growing her freelancing business.

She’s now been freelancing for a year and a half, and this is her second year not returning to the classroom in the fall. Amanda’s freelance business focuses on virtual assistant (VA) work, but she also takes on some creative tasks like social media management and blogging. Amanda specializes in working with wealth managers, and she shares how she found this profitable niche and the benefits of working with established local business owners who truly value her services.

Flexible Hours, Financial Freedom

With five clients under her belt, Amanda manages a range of tasks for them while enjoying the flexibility of working from home. She talks about how she connected with her clients, the benefits freelancers bring to business owners, and what a typical workday looks like for her.
