294: From Teacher to Virtual Assistant: How Marissa Gerchikov Made the Leap

EPISODE 294 SHOW NOTES

Are you a mom looking for more flexibility and freedom? Freelancing might be the perfect solution for you! In today’s episode, I’m chatting with Marissa Gerchikov about how she went from teacher to virtual assistant and ultimately made the leap to becoming a work-from-home mom!

Marissa’s Journey from Teacher to Freelancer

Marissa learned about freelancing from a friend, a fellow LFA alum. Intrigued by the possibility of earning some extra income, Marissa decided to give freelancing a try while still working full-time as a teacher.

Making Freelancing Work with a Full-Time Job

Marissa shares how she managed to fit client work in while still working full-time. She worked from 7 pm to 9 pm so it didn’t impact her time with her kids or her job. Although it was a busy period, she enjoyed the work, which made it easier to keep going for a short season. Plus, she didn’t mind having an additional paycheck coming in!

Taking the Leap: Leaving Teaching Behind

Marissa talks about what helped her decide to leave teaching after only a few months of freelancing. With one large client, she was already making half of her teaching income! She started realizing how doable it was going to be to replace her income while working fewer hours.

Learning the Ropes of Freelancing

Marissa shares how she learned to do client tasks. YouTube and hands-on experience were key for her. She also emphasized the importance of asking clients directly. During onboarding, she simply asks her clients, “Do you have any videos that can walk me through the task and that I can refer back to?” Most of her clients provide her with Loom videos of the tasks they want done.

Marissa’s story is an inspring one you don’t want to miss! If you’re a teacher dreading going back to school this fall, this episode is packed with valuable insights on how to transition from teaching to freelancing.
