286: How I Landed My First Freelancing Client and What I Learned Along the Way

Hey there! Today I’m excited to share a bit about my own story, how I landed my first freelancing client, and what I learned along the way. Lately, the number one thing I’ve been hearing from so many of you is that you’re scared you won’t be able to land freelancing clients. That’s a legitimate fear and one I struggled with too! It actually took me 7 months to land my first client… definitely not ideal. However, through my struggles, I learned a ton of valuable insights along the way. I tweaked and perfected the actions I was taking to land clients, and I’m excited to share what I learned with you today. Here’s a glimpse of what I learned:

1) Tailor your pitch for different clients or job opportunities.

In the beginning, I was just copying and pasting my pitch from job posting to the next, and I was hearing crickets in return. If you want to stand out, you have to personalize your emails.

2) Don’t shy away from promoting yourself.

This is not the time to be humble. Highlight your strengths and skills!

3) When asked if you have experience, remember that you DO have experience.

Whether you’re a teacher, a mom, a nurse, someone that works in HR, or whatever it is that you do, you do have experience. Skills from your past experiences transfer over! Reframe the way you think about your qualifications. For instance, I might not have had any experience running someone’s social media but I did have experience getting my sophomore English students engaged and talking about the books we were reading. I was confident that if I could get high schoolers excited about Macbeth, then I could definitely help a small business nurture and engage their social media audience.
