275: Is freelancing sustainable as a long term career?

EPISODE 275 SHOW NOTES

Hey there! Happy Monday! On today’s episode, I’m answering a question I get asked from time to time: Is freelancing sustainable as a long term career? Maybe you’re interested in the flexibility and freedom that comes along with freelancing, but you’re concerned about the stability and longevity of it. You’re wondering if freelancing is just a fad or a trend. Let’s dive in and chat about that!

First, yes, you can sustain a freelance career for the long haul. You can sustain it, maintain it, and even grow it past your financial goals. The sky is the limit with freelancing. There is no ceiling. You can specialize in one specific skill set, become the expert of that sought after service, and charge whatever you like. I went from charging $20/hour to $75/hour. As long as there’s a demand, there’s no cap on what you can charge for your services.

There are so many businesses who need the support of freelancers. Just as an example, think of the your nearest shopping center. There are probably a handful of businesses in it. Chances are those businesses all need the same basic things. They need marketing help, bookkeeping help, admin help, copywriting help, web help, tech support, and on and on. There are so many things that those businesses need help with that they either don’t know how to do, don’t have the desire to learn it, or don’t have the time to do it. So instead of just staying stagnant, tons and tons of those businesses are hiring freelancers to help them. I used a local brick and mortar shopping center in that example, but that’s just one example. There are small businesses, corporate businesses, and online businesses all needing support.

As long as there are businesses, there is going to be a need and a demand for freelancers. It is not a fad. It is not a trend. It is not going to be replaced and nonexistent a few years down the road. Freelancing is here as long as there are businesses. (Forever!)

If you’re already freelancing or will be soon, there are a few tips to make sure you maintain longterm success.

1. Make sure you are investing in your retirement.

You can get something that is called a SEP IRA. You can meet with a financial planner and look at options and get that set up. As a business owner and freelancer, you can still contribute to your retirement on a monthly basis!

2. Be adaptable.

Things are going to change. Technology changes. What businesses are looking for and needing help with changes. Think about Pinterest! It came around when I was in college, and now it’s something business leverage and oftentimes get the support they need from a Pinterest Manager.

3. Focus on learning and staying up to date on trends.

The best thing to invest in is always going to be your knowledge. The more you learn, the more you increase your skill set, the more value you can bring to businesses, and ultimately, the more you can charge. And, your learning doesn’t always have to come from paid sources! YouTube, blogs, podcasts all are great resources for learning.
